Ponies from India
The original 6 ponies were produced in India back in the 80's. They look a lot like their US counterparts, but there are a few differences. Their plastic is very rubber-like and squishable, the colours are a little different but that can be hard to spot on pictures. There's something about their eyes and symbols that are a bit off, and if I'm not mistaken, their manes and tails are longer, too.
Butterscotch has 2 variants, a dark and a light - and the light one (which is the one I have) has blonde hair. I'm afraid I don't own either of these 3 from Hong Kong to compare. I would love to get them in the future though, so I can compare them properly.
The easiest way to identify an Indian pony is to look at their hooves. They say "Funskool, pat. pending, Made in India"

A stroke of luck
I was browsing danish craigslist-type websites one day and three ads caught my attention. The first was Snuzzle, and I was dead sure her eyes were different from the other one. I instantly thought "could it be?" but I didn't think it would be possible for them to appear in Denmark of all countries!
I moved on to Bluebelle and again I thought something were off. I noticed the hair, which seemed much longer.
I took a quick look at Butterscotch, and my heart stopped beating. At least it felt like it, LOL! I saw her gorgeous blonde hair and, while shaking on my hands, wrote the seller and asked if they said Funskool underneath their hoofs. I already knew that Butter would at least be, but I wanted to check. I went out to eat and when I got back she had replied...
Yes, they did. She also wrote that I should decide in a hurry, because she had two other buyers who were VERY interested.. Needless to say, I asked for her payment details and sent a payment instantly! I sent more than she asked (nope, they were not 1$ each, they would have been overpriced if it were the regular editions) because I wanted to thank her for holding them until I decided.
I owe a lot to the people at the arena who've showed off their Indian ponies before. If not for them, I wouldn't have taken a second look on these.
They all have a forelock cut and are a bit grubby - my cleaning method doesn't work well on their plastic. I've had similar problems cleaning fakies before. Butter, who is my favourite of the bunch, also have a lot of marks and differently coloured patches on her, but I couldn't care less. I think they are certainly worthy of a shelf in my display cabinet! <3
